GATHERING
OPENING HYMN –
CHIMING OF THE HOUR and WELCOMING THE LIGHT
GREETINGS – Rev. Martha M. Shiverick
CALL TO WORSHIP — Bryan Page
One: We have come to worship God. Let us come with humility.
All: We offer all that we are, knowing that we need God’s Spirit to be what we ought to be.
One: We have come to worship God. Let us come with expectation.
All: In the Divine Presence there is light for our darkness and purpose in our striving. Praise be to God!
CALL TO CONFESSION – Kathy Stults & Karen Moyer
If we claim to be sinless, we are self-deceived and strangers to the truth.
If we confess our sins, God is just and may be trusted to forgive our sins and cleanse us from every kind of wrong. Let us admit our sins before God.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Sometimes, O God, your word is too much for us. You ask us to love our enemies, when we can scarcely love our friends as we should. You ask us to give when we want to take, and to forgive when we want to nurse bitterness. We thank you that you accept us as we are, and that you show us what we can be. Help us to believe that we can be loving, just, and holy like you; through the grace of Jesus Christ. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us.
Anyone in Christ is of the new creation; Old things have passed away and all things are new. Friends: Believe the good news of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

THE WORD
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION — Bryan Page
Lord, help us to keep our focus on you. Speak to us your word, O God, that we may hear your call to discipleship and follow where you lead. Amen.
ANTHEM

- Hymn 661 — “Why Should I Feel Discouraged?” (His Eye is on the Sparrow)
SCRIPTURE
-
- Jonah 3:1-5
Conversion of Nineveh
The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying,
“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.”
So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across.
Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.
SERMON — Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER – Michelle Garcia & Stephanie Godoy
God of new visions, we pray for our country and its new president and for all people highly placed in power, that they may focus their eyes on you.
And we pray for the lowly victims of power, that they may also focus their eyes on you.
We pray for those who bless with their lips but curse with their mouths, including ourselves.
We pray for those who are ill, who have COVID and recuperating and for those who are facing the end of life. Give them the gift of prayer, that they may pour out their hearts to you.
We pray for the church and its leaders, that we may hear and respond to
your call to be your faithful servants and disciples of Jesus Christ, who also taught us to pray in this manner:
For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.
Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who
sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.
