GATHERING
OPENING HYMN –
CHIMING OF THE HOUR and WELCOMING THE LIGHT
GREETINGS – Rev. Martha M. Shiverick
CALL TO WORSHIP — Butch Sorenson
One: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
All: The Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters; then God said: Let there be light, and God saw that it was good.
One: At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus was baptized by John.
All: The heavens opened, and the Spirit descended like a dove; then God said: This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.
CALL TO CONFESSION — Amy Bogardus
The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord! Repent, for the realm of heaven has come near. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us a part of the church, the body of Christ. We confess that we remain preoccupied with ourselves, separated from one another. We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another. We allow the past to hold us captive.
In your loving kindness, have mercy on us, and free us from sin. Fulfill the promise of our baptism so that we may rise to new life, and live together in grace.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Hear the good news of the Gospel: As a voice from heaven said to Jesus, so, God says to each of us: You are my beloved child, and with you I am well pleased. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!

THE WORD
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION –– Butch Sorenson
Saving God, source of our calling, Your Word is full of power and glory. Pour out your Ruach, your Spirit, upon us so that we may receive your grace and live as your beloved children; Through all that is Holy. Amen.

SCRIPTURE
-
- Genesis 1:1-5 Six Days of Creation and the Sabbath — Butch Sorenson
1 In the beginning when God created[a] the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God[b] swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

- Mark 1: 4-11 — Amy Bogardus
4 John the baptizer appeared[a] in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with[b] water; but he will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism of Jesus
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved;[d] with you I am well pleased.”

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER – Janet Peterson
Let us pray to God, saying, Give strength, and bless us with peace. All-glorious God, maker of heaven and earth, hear us as we pray: Give strength, O God, and bless us with peace.
We pray for the world you have made, Now fighting a pandemic, now fighting global warming and environmental disaster…
Move again over these troubled waters, steeped in chemicals and stained in blood. Where carelessness, personal greed, and violence bring chaos restore order, goodness, and life.
Give strength, O God, and bless us with your peace.
We pray for the peoples you have created…
Give the leaders of all nations, particularly President-Elect Biden, the wisdom to know what is good. Where people are poor and hungry provide justice and daily bread. Where racism and hatred of others festers provide acceptance, understanding, and respect.
Give strength, O God, and bless us with your peace.
We pray for the loved ones you have given us…
Bless our families, friends, and neighbors; keep them healthy and safe from trouble and danger. Where there is sorrow, sickness, or suffering send your Spirit of comfort and healing.
Give strength, O God, and bless us with your peace.
We pray all this in Christ’s name who also taught us when we prayed to pray in this manner:
For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.
Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
