OPENING HYMN

CHIMING OF THE HOUR & WELCOMING THE LIGHT

WELCOME Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

CALL TO WORSHIP Kathy Stults

One: Christ was born among us!

All: God lives within our world.

One: Because of God-with-us, life is full of promise for you and for me. Life is full of promise for our community.

All: We celebrate today the presence of God’s promise in our midst.

One: The promise of a small child coming into a crowded, hurting world, and growing to be a liberator.

All: It is the promise of you and me, struggling and stumbling together, growing and celebrating, reaching out to make a new presence in our world.

One: Let us worship God!

CALL TO CONFESSION Laura Fothergill & David German

Trusting in God’s love made known in the gift of Jesus, let us confess our sins.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION unison, Laura Fothergill & David German

God of wonder, you surround us with signs of your glory and surprise us with your presence, yet we often miss the marvels you place before us.

Forgive our dullness and make us alert to the ways you make yourself known, that we might be witnesses to your good news and proclaim your extravagant love; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Laura Fothergill & David German

As children of the Holy One, God forgives you and loves you eternally. By the power of God’s Spirit, forgive yourself and forgive others as God has forgiven you.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Rey, Barbara & Nicole Prieto

God’s light breaks through the darkness to fill our lives with grace and truth. This is the good news of Christmas and every day; that Christ came to show us how to walk the path of wisdom enlightened by your love. Let us pray for the world and our church saying,

Light of the world, shine in our lives.

Eternal Source, Divine Wisdom, we pray for all leaders of the world in this time of Pandemics of Racism and a Virus. May your justice guide them to govern with truth and equity for all.

Prince of Peace, we pray for all those who live and serve in medical facilities and places of unrest. May you keep them from unrest.

Spirit breath, we pray for the beauty of creation witnessed from the vault of heaven to the depths of the sea.

May your goodness stir up in us a willingness to care for the precious resources with which you have entrusted us.

Light of the world, shine in our lives.

Joy of every human heart, we pray for all who suffer sickness and sorrow. May your healing love find a dwelling place in our lives this day. Holy Comforter, we pray for those in need of food and shelter.

May your abiding presence shelter them with mercy as we build communities of care. Eternal Dayspring from on High, we pray for those who are dying and those who have died. May they find in you a resting place by springs of living water.

Light of the world, shine in our lives.

Oh Great Mystery, eternity entered time in your Word and our lives are embraced within the compassion of your Word. Open our hearts to the wonder of your love, that Wisdom may find a home in us and forever speak your praise.

We pray all this in Christ’s name who also taught us to pray in this manner:

For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith, and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.

THE LORD’S PRAYER unison

Our Creator in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
