GATHERING

OPENING HYMN

CHIMING OF THE HOUR

WELCOMING THE LIGHT

WELCOME – Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

CALL TO WORSHIP – Barbara Overton

One: Great Spirit, you have turned your face earthward and opened your heart to your children,

All: And so, O God, do we turn to you now.

One: We turn to you for purpose and correction,

All: For joy and peace,

One: For a way out of hopeless situations,

All: For justice,

One: For forgiveness,

All: For love.

One: We turn to you, O God, as you give us hope.

All: Let us worship God!

CALL TO CONFESSION – Elaine Lanaris

A very sad statement was made about the month of March 2020. It was that ‘one good thing about the Corona Virus is that it was the first March in 18 years where there was not an instance with firearms on school campuses.’ We have hurt our children by our actions and our inactions in gun control. In penitence and in abiding faith for our world made whole, let us confess before God and our neighbors. Let us pray:

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – (from the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship)

One: God of justice and grace, sometimes we feel far from bearing your image. 90 people die every day from gun violence in the U.S. 10 of these are children. Lord, in your mercy,

All: Forgive us.

One: God of justice and of grace, sometimes we feel far from bearing your image. The U.S. rate of firearm deaths for children is twelve times higher than 25 other industrialized nations combined. Lord, in your mercy

All: Forgive us.

One: God of justice and grace, sometimes we feel far from bearing your image. More than 30,000 Americans die from guns every year in the U.S. This is far more than the total servicemen and women killed in the war in Iraq. Lord, in your mercy,

All: Forgive us.

One: God of justice and grace, sometimes we feel far from bearing your image. 40% of the guns bought in the United States are bought from private sellers, mostly at Gun Shows. Neither background checks nor firearm safety classes are required in these private exchanges. Lord, in your mercy,

All: Forgive us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God says to us, “You are my chosen ones. I love you. I am proud of you. Stand firm in your renewed commitment. Know that I have forgiven you; I call you by name; you are mine. I have entered into covenant with you and will stand by you in all times and all places.

Dare to live fully the life to which I have called you.”

Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel. In Jesus’ name you are forgiven.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Rev. Martha Shiverick

THE WORD

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION – Mimi Sutherland

God, it is by the power of your Spirit that these words still live.

Subordinate in us any voice but your own, and grant us understanding. Confront us with your claims on our lives. Clarify the choices we must make if our lives are to have meaning and purpose. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Mimi Sutherland

We pray to be disarmed from interior violence. God of Peace, soften our hearts and teach us to be kind to ourselves, in both word and deed.

We pray: God of Peace, disarm us.

We pray to be disarmed from social violence. Teach us, source of all peace, how to practice nonviolence with all people. May our practice of nonviolent love, alleviate shame, disgrace, redeem the oppressor, and welcome the outcast.

We pray: God of Peace, disarm us.

We pray to be disarmed from violence in our workplaces and schools. God of Peace, give us the love we need at work and at school when things become difficult. May we have the eyes to see that others may be in pain and need that special gift of care, which we are being called to share with them in that moment.

We pray: God of Peace, disarm us.

We pray to be disarmed from systems of violence. May the Spirit of Peace empower us to subvert systems of violence by taking risks that herald the reign of God, which is a reign of all-inclusive and nonviolent love.

We pray: God of Peace, disarm us.

All loving God, thank you for the gift of disarmament. Renew our spirits today, God of Peace, and give us the grace to practice nonviolence in the face of a culture of violence in which we live. Empower us to actively engage in peacemaking, so that we may be your children of peace. We pray all this in Jesus’ name who also taught us to pray in this manner:

For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith, and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.

THE LORD’S PRAYER – unison

Our Creator in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
